  Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph/20 kph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.
   
  WHY DOES THIS RIDE EXIST?
    
   To HONOR those who have been injured or killed   
   To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here   
   To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD 
  THE RIDE OF SILENCE?? WILL NOT BE QUIET
  On May 16, 2007, at 8:00 PM, the Ride of Silence?? will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.
   
  In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.
   
The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-shirt. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

  Are you up for a little ride?  How about from Sioux Falls to Brookngs and back over two days?  How far is that you ask?  Not that far ?? only 150 miles.
   
  Before you freak out and scream, ??I could never bike that far in two days!?? let me tell you that you can.  It??s no biggie ?? really.  Not if you start training for it now.  I??ll even help.  Really.
   
  Saturday August 4th and Sunday August 5th are the ride dates.  I know just the two chicks who can sign you up.  The website is www.myMSbikeride.org.  There??s lots of info on there, too.  I can get you in touch with the proper people to sign you up.
   
  Let me alleviate your apprehensions.  Once around the bike trail is 19 miles.  You can do that ?? easy.  Now just link some of those together and before you know it, you??re in Brookings!  Remember this is not a RACE this is a RIDE.  This means you don??t have to be out there pounding and pounding to keep up.  And, since this is a RIDE, you may stop as often as you??d like!
   
  Now for the training part.  I??m leading a training ride that starts every Saturday at 5:30 PM from the Renberg School.  We talk about how to safely ride on the road, what you might need, in addition to working on our mileage base.  This ride is for the inexperienced and the ride pace is easy.  It??s just the sort of thing you??ll need to get you ready for the big day!
   
  I encourage you to step and take this first step toward bike touring.  I??m confident you??ll have a great time.  In fact, you??ll probably like it so much you??ll sign up for the Tour De Kota next year and maybe even RAGBRAI.  Doing your first longer, touring ride gives such a great sense of accomplishment AND this is for a very important cause.
   
  If you??re now very interested or if you have any questions regarding any of this, please shoot me an email.  For those of you who sign up, I??ll buy you a beer in Brookings!  I??ll get you in touch with the right people to sign up with.
   
  Oops!  I forgot to mention.  This is a completely supported ride.  Which means ?? food!  And lots of it.  Also, your overnight stuff will be carted to and fro by the MS people.  All you need to do is ride and eat!

Saturday morning, departing O'Gorman at 8am is the coffee & donut ride. The
destination/goal is Dunn Brothers on the east edge of the city. I'm not sure
if we can get that far at the group speed so Kaladis is the bail-out. Come
on out and enjoy parts of the city  you didn't know were there.and do it
before the traffic gets Saturday heavy.

So, has your week been as long as mine?  Need some therapy to alleviate the mush residing between your ears?  Do you hear a margarita calling your name ?? loudly?
   
  How about some alternative therapy first?  How about some crank turning therapy?  Please join the FAB Crue tomorrow for a couple ??o rides.
   
  Beginning at 8 AM in the O??Gorman H.S. parking lot is the coffee and donut ride.  All you need is a need for some caffeine, a couple ??o bucks to buy it, a bike, a helmet, and to get your butt out of bed and over to the designated place.  I??ll be attending the ride but Ride Leader Michael will be leading us to parts unknown.
   
  The pace is as fast as the slowest rider ?? which translates into ??very easy pace.??  Come one, come all.  We had a great group last time.  Come be part.
   
  If that does not provide enough crank turning therapy for you, join me again for Road Riding 101, 5:30 PM, Renberg School.  This will be an easy paced road ride for those wanting experience riding with a group, those training for the Tour de Kota or the MS Ride or what-have-you, or those who just want to get out for some, yes, crank therapy.
   
  It wouldn??t hurt to throw a couple ??o bucks in the seat bag in case we stop somewhere for refreshments.  There is a solid base of riders but more would be very welcome.
